Awareness
Newborn Screening
Emma's Foundation continues to raise awareness through pushing for newborn screening
in California. By signing up with Emma's Foundation, you can help the foundation
push for screening in Californina. By testing for MLD at birth, many children
will be given the opportunity to explore treatment options. It is far too
often that MLD is mis-diagnosed (
See Emma's Story) or the diagnosis comes too late.

Research
Cell Replacement Therapy Through Stem Cells
Duke University is working with growing two particular types of cell called oligodendrocyte
and "bright cells". These cells potentially have the ability to stop MLD and repair cell damage. There is much research needed to look into the delivery
system and how the immune system reacts to these cells for non-transplanted children.
With continued support, Phase I trials could start as early as the end of 2006.
This type of cell replacement therapy is very exciting.
Donations to Emma's
Foundation will go to assisting this project.
