MLD is a genetic disorder. Both parents are typically carriers for the MLD
gene (in rare instances there are new mutations).
- Approximately, 1 in 200 people carry the MLD gene.
- Approximately 1 out of every 40,000 children are affected
by MLD.
- If the gene is carried by both parents, for each child,
there is a 25% chance the child will have MLD. There is a 50% chance that
the child will be a carrier. There is a 25% chance that the child will neither
have the gene nor MLD.
- If the gene is carried by only one parent, for each child,
there is 50% chance the child will be a carrier for MLD.
