MLD is a genetic disorder.  Both parents are typically carriers for the MLD gene (in rare instances there are new mutations).

  • Approximately, 1 in 200 people carry the MLD gene.
  • Approximately 1 out of every 40,000 children are affected by MLD.

  • If the gene is carried by both parents, for each child, there is a 25% chance the child will have MLD.  There is a  50% chance that the child will be a carrier.  There is a 25% chance that the child will neither have the gene nor MLD.

  • If the gene is carried by only one parent, for each child, there is 50% chance the child will be a carrier for MLD.

  • Dr. Wenger provides MLD testing.
